Recapping Our 2025 Viennese Ball
A Night of Elegance and Learning: Our Tribute to Vienna’s Ball Season
On February 1st, our studio transformed into a shimmering tribute to Vienna’s legendary ball season. But this wasn’t just a night of glamour - it was a learning experience, a series of group classes and guided practice sessions woven into the form of a grand ball. Designed for dancers of all levels, this event provided an opportunity to step into the world of Viennese tradition while refining skills and building confidence on the dance floor.
A Grand Opening: Setting the Stage for the Night
Before the lessons even began, we set the tone for the evening with a vigorous Viennese waltz demonstration by those preparing to travel to Vienna. Their movement showcased the grace and energy of the dance, inspiring everyone in the room.
We were then treated to a stunning rumba performance by Audrey and her teacher, David, filled with passion and elegance. Matthew and and his student Nannette followed with a breathtaking American-style slow waltz, offering a different but equally refined interpretation of ballroom dance.
With the opening ceremonies complete, it was time to dive into the learning experience that made this event so unique.
Matthew announced “Alles Walzer” and every single person in attendance joined in for the first social Waltz of the evening.
A Ball That Teaches: Learning Through Tradition
This evening was about more than just dancing - it was about learning. We began with a Viennese waltz class, ensuring that every guest- whether a seasoned dancer or complete beginner - could confidently take the floor.
The Fledermaus Quadrille followed (specifically Part 6, Finale), bringing laughter and excitement as we guided guests through the playful yet structured choreography. Think of it as an elegant square dance, where partners weave and spin to the lively music of Johann Strauss. Later in the night, we returned to Part 6 of the Fledermaus Quadrille for our final dance, reinforcing what everyone had learned and ending on a high note of shared joy.
Dressed for the Occasion & A Taste of Vienna
Guests fully embraced the white/black tie optional dress code, with at least a dozen men arriving in full tailsuits, adding to the authenticity of the evening. The women’s gowns flowed across the floor, bringing the romance of Vienna to life.
As a special treat, Matthew had two Sacher Tortes flown in from the legendary Hotel Sacher in Vienna, allowing guests to indulge in an authentic taste of Austria. Paired with coffee and other Viennese pastries, the refreshments fueled the dancers as they practiced and perfected their steps.
A Dance Floor Full of Learning and Laughter
Throughout the night, the floor remained full - not just with experienced dancers, but with some who had just learned their first steps! Every waltz, foxtrot, and quadrille became a chance to grow, refine technique, and build confidence. With each turn and step, guests weren’t just attending a ball - they were actively becoming dancers, immersing themselves in an experience that blended elegance with education.
Looking Ahead to Next Year
As the evening came to a close, there was a collective feeling of accomplishment - not just for the beauty of the event, but for how much everyone had learned. This was more than just a social gathering; it was a place to practice, improve, and build skills that will carry us into future balls, whether here in Chicago or in Vienna itself.
We can’t wait to do it all again next year - bigger, better, and filled with even more opportunities to learn and dance. Until then, keep practicing, keep waltzing, and keep the spirit of the ball season alive!
