The Best Balls to Attend in Vienna in January

Each year, our studio eagerly plans its annual trip to Vienna for February’s ball season, where we usually attend the lively Kaffeesiederball and the glamorous Vienna Opernball. Lately, however, many of our dancers have been curious about experiencing Vienna’s famed balls a bit earlier. So, we’ve done our homework, consulted our Vienna-based dance friends, and are excited to share that January is just as dazzling. If you're considering an earlier visit, here are our top 5 January balls that promise an unforgettable Viennese experience!

1. The Confectioners' Ball (Zuckerbäckerball)  

   Held at the magnificent Hofburg Palace in mid-January (January 16, 2025), the Confectioners' Ball is a sweet delight for anyone with a taste for elegance and dessert! Organized by Vienna’s bakers and confectioners, this ball is famed not only for its traditional waltzes but also for the hundreds of stunning cakes and pastries on display. A highlight of the evening is the lottery of cakes, where lucky winners take home magnificent confections prepared by Vienna’s finest pastry chefs. Beyond the delicious treats, the ball offers multiple dance floors and live orchestras, making it a delightful blend of culinary artistry and high-society elegance in one of Vienna’s most iconic venues.


2. The Flower Ball (Blumenball)

Held at the stunning Vienna City Hall (January 17, 2025), the Flower Ball (Blumenball) is a vibrant celebration of nature’s beauty. Organized by the city’s gardening association, the Rathaus is transformed into a floral wonderland, with thousands of flowers decorating the halls. 3.  The Philharmonic Ball (Wiener Philharmoniker Ball)  One of Vienna’s most elite events, the Philharmonic Ball takes place at the grand Vienna Musikverein, home of the world-renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. This ball, held in mid-January (January 23, 2025), is a classical music lover’s dream. With stunning performances by the Vienna Philharmonic and a dazzling opening ceremony, it is an unforgettable experience. Typically held towards the end of January (January 25, 2025), this ball is not only a celebration for the medical community but also one of the most highly anticipated public balls of the season. With its distinguished opening ceremony and performances from renowned opera singers and dancers, the ball offers an elegant evening of waltzing in various grand ballrooms. 5. The Jägerball (Hunter's Ball) 

   If you’re looking for a ball with a twist, the Jägerball, held at the Hofburg Palace in late January (January 29, 2025), offers a uniquely Austrian experience. With a nod to the country's deep-rooted hunting traditions, guests at this ball don traditional attire, such as dirndls and loden jackets, creating a festive and folkloric atmosphere. The ball combines formal dances with rustic charm, featuring live folk music alongside classical waltzes. The Jägerball’s down-to-earth vibe mixed with the imperial elegance of the Hofburg makes it a standout event in Vienna’s January ball calendar.
