What is DanceSport?

DanceSport is the term used worldwide to describe learning ballroom dancing at a high level of technical mastery. It also refers to competitive ballroom dancing, but don’t worry—you don’t have to compete if you don’t want to! At Ballroom Dance Chicago, we specialize in the American styles of DanceSport: Smooth and Rhythm.

American Smooth dances include waltz, foxtrot, tango, and Viennese waltz. In American Rhythm, you’ll find cha cha, rumba, east coast swing, bolero, and mambo.

Levels of DanceSport Training

DanceSport training is divided into three levels: bronze, silver, and gold. Each dance has specific figures allowed at each level, making learning the syllabus figures essential. These figures form the template for developing partner dance skills like frame, connection, and movement. Dancers then use these figures in routines, putting their skills into action and developing their floor presence and artistic presentation.

Enjoying the Journey

Many dancers enjoy mastering the technical aspects of DanceSport without the goal of performing or competing. Mastery of technique and artistry is a success in its own right. However, if you love the thrill of competition, there are plenty of opportunities. From amateur to professional competitions, and even Pro-Am competitions where a teacher competes with their student, there’s something for everyone. Dancers of all ages enjoy showcasing their skills and creativity on the dance floor.
