Sommernachtsball (Summer Nights Ball)

Sommernachtsball: A Celebration of the Summer Solstice

The Summer Solstice marks the longest day of the year—a time when the sun lingers in the sky, and the night stretches its arms out just a little further. Across cultures and centuries, people have celebrated this moment with music, dance, and revelry. As dancers, we know there’s no better way to honor the changing seasons than by moving together, raising a glass, and making the most of the night. So, let’s do just that!

Dress Code: Summer Formal

Flowing gowns or cocktail dresses in light, summery hues. Lightweight suits, summer tuxedos, tailsuits—keep it formal, but make it breathable.

What’s Happening?

Grand Opening Ceremony – A theatrical, staff-led presentation that sets the tone for the night, invoking the spirit of the solstice. The ceremony concludes with a Solstice Toast—because no great celebration starts without a proper cheers.

Summer Waltz Class – A guided session to get everyone floating across the floor with confidence.

Grand Polonaise Class & Procession – This majestic, processional dance is a time-honored way to mark grand occasions. Rooted in tradition, the Polonaise represents unity, movement, and the transition into a new season—making it the perfect dance to welcome summer. We’ll learn it together before taking to the floor in an elegant procession, honoring the solstice the way dancers do best: by moving as one.

Curated Dance Music – A mix of classic waltzes and summer-inspired selections to keep the night lively.

Harvest Ball

Harvest Ball

The Harvest Ball marks the beginning of the Chicago Ball Season, setting the tone for the months of dance, celebration, and camaraderie that follow. As we transition into the cooler months, we gather to share the bounty of the season—not just in food and drink, but in company, conversation, and dance.

In many cultures, the harvest is a time of gathering and gratitude, a moment to come together before the long winter ahead. This ball is our way of honoring that tradition—sharing what we love with others, whether it’s a favorite bottle of wine, a beloved cheese, or simply the joy of movement on the dance floor.

No one comes to the Harvest Ball empty-handed. Guests are encouraged to bring something to share—a bottle of wine, a cheese or two, or another treat you love. This is not a formal wine tasting, but a celebration of abundance, where we share the things that bring us joy.

The Evening’s Schedule:

• Foxtrot Class – The perfect way to start the evening, focusing on graceful movement and easy elegance around the floor. Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or brand new, this class will have you gliding with confidence in no time.

• Social Dancing – Throughout the night, enjoy open dancing to a lively mix of ballroom, swing, and Latin music. Dance if you’d like, or sit back and soak in the atmosphere—ball season is as much about connection as it is about dancing.

• Fledermaus Quadrille (Part 1) Class – A spirited and theatrical group dance, the Fledermaus Quadrille is a highlight of Viennese ball tradition. In this class, we’ll learn the first part of this delightful and often hilarious dance, setting the stage for future balls where we’ll dance it in full.

• Wine & Cheese Sharing – Each guest (or couple) is invited to bring a bottle of wine and a cheese or two to share. The only rule? Bring something you love—a wine you’re proud to introduce to others, a cheese that makes you happy. We’ll provide crackers, serving trays, and all the essentials.

This gathering isn’t just about dancing—it’s about creating a tradition of generosity and community. As the days grow shorter and the nights longer, we set the precedent for the months ahead: we share, we celebrate, and we keep each other warm with laughter, movement, and good company.

Event Details:

Quadrille Ball

Ball season is about more than just dancing—it’s about shared experiences, collective joy, and the magic of moving together. Following the Harvest Ball, where we shared food and drink in celebration of the season, we now take that same spirit of community and togetherness to the dance floor at the Quadrille Ball.

The quadrille is unlike any other ballroom dance. While you still dance with a partner, the magic of the quadrille lies in dancing with the entire room—moving in patterns, weaving in and out of formations, laughing as you try to keep up, and ultimately becoming part of something bigger than yourself.

For those new to the Fledermaus Quadrille, this is your chance to learn it from the ground up in a setting designed for fun, camaraderie, and excitement. If you’ve ever been at a ball and watched others dive into this energetic, theatrical dance, wondering how they know what to do—this is your chance to join in. By the time the night is over, you’ll be ready to step confidently onto the floor at every ball to come.

For those who have danced the quadrille before, this is an opportunity to perfect your timing, refine your style, and enjoy the dance in its full glory.

But most of all, this ball is about celebrating the holiday season together—a time of gathering, connection, and shared joy.

What is the Fledermaus Quadrille?

The Fledermaus Quadrille is one of the most famous and exhilarating group dances of the Viennese ball season. It is set to the lively and theatrical music of Johann Strauss II, composed for his operetta Die Fledermaus (The Bat), which premiered in 1874.

Unlike the waltz or foxtrot, the quadrille is not a partner dance in the traditional sense. Instead, it’s a structured, playful, and sometimes chaotic dance performed in groups of four couples. With marches, turns, weaving figures, and dramatic arm movements, the quadrille blends precision with spontaneity—often ending in delighted confusion as dancers scramble to keep up with the ever-increasing tempo.

The Fledermaus Quadrille, in particular, is known for its joyful energy and theatrical flair. In Vienna, it is performed at nearly every ball of the season, often as a midnight tradition, bringing the entire ballroom together for one of the most anticipated moments of the night.

The Evening’s Schedule:

• Fledermaus Quadrille Class (Section 2) – We continue our ball season tradition by learning the second section of the Fledermaus Quadrille. Whether you’re new to the dance or have already mastered Section 1 at the Harvest Ball, this class will prepare you for the next exhilarating figures of the quadrille.

• Social Dancing – Between classes, enjoy an open dance floor with a mix of ballroom, swing, and festive selections to keep the night lively.

• Fledermaus Quadrille Class (Section 3) – Now that we’ve built confidence, we’ll move into Section 3 of the quadrille, adding even more intricate patterns, quick turns, and playful energy to the dance.

• More Social Dancing – After the final class, the floor is yours! Enjoy more dancing, conversation, and celebration as the night continues.

This ball is not just about learning steps—it’s about laughing, meeting new people, and sharing in the excitement of a dance that has brought people together for generations.

Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or brand new to the ballroom, the Quadrille Ball is your chance to be part of something extraordinary.

Event Details:

• Date: Saturday, November 15, 2025

• Time: 8:00 PM – 11:00 PM (Doors open at 7:45 PM)

• Location: Ballroom Dance Chicago | 4039B N Ravenswood Ave, Chicago, IL

• Price: $80/person

• Age Requirement: 21+

• Attire: Formal – Black tie or white tie preferred, but we’re not strict. Simply wear your best and be ready to celebrate in style.

This is the most formal, grand, and anticipated event of the season, where we celebrate the tradition, music, and movement that make Viennese balls legendary. Whether you’re preparing for your own trip to Vienna or simply longing to dance the Viennese waltz, this night invites you to experience the beauty of a truly timeless tradition.

The Evening’s Schedule:

Viennese Waltz Class – This dance is the heartbeat of any Viennese ball. We’ll begin the evening with a class designed to help dancers of all levels glide across the floor with effortless grace and exhilarating speed. Whether you’re new to the dance or refining your technique, this class will prepare you to waltz the night away.

Quadrille Instruction – A highlight of any ball season, the Fledermaus Quadrille transforms the ballroom into a whirlwind of movement. It begins in neat formation but quickly unravels into a joyful, theatrical blur of laughter, spinning partners, and playful energy. If you’ve never danced a quadrille before, this is your moment to experience the tradition that electrifies Viennese ballrooms year after year.

Social Dancing – Following the classes, the night is yours to dance. The floor will be alive with the rhythms of Viennese waltz, English waltz, foxtrot, quickstep, and swing. Every dance, every conversation, and every gesture contributes to the collective elegance of the evening.

Viennese Coffee & Confections – No Viennese ball is complete without a proper coffeehouse moment. We’ll be serving a selection of brews to keep dancers refreshed, alongside a spread of Austrian-inspired pastries, including Sacher Torte flown in directly from The Sacher Hotel in Vienna. Additional sweet treats from Lutz Bakery will round out the evening’s indulgences.

Valentine’s Day Ball

This Valentine’s Day, leave behind the usual dinner reservations and step into a night of movement, meaning, and connection at the Valentine’s Ball. Here, dance becomes more than just steps—it becomes a way to deepen your bond, share in joy, and be fully present with the person you love.

Under the glow of soft candlelight and the sweeping sounds of ballroom music, you’ll have the chance to celebrate your relationship in a setting designed for romance—where every turn, step, and moment together becomes a memory to cherish.

Rumba Class (7:30 PM – 8:15 PM) – The rumba is often called the “dance of love” for good reason. With its slow, expressive movements and deep connection, it’s the perfect way to start the night with intimacy and grace. You’ll learn how to move fluidly with your partner, emphasizing communication, rhythm, and trust.

Social Dancing (8:15 PM – 9:00 PM) – The dance floor opens for you to practice what you’ve learned, share a dance together, or simply enjoy the romance of the night. A curated mix of ballroom, Latin, and slow dance favorites will keep the energy flowing, whether you want to sweep across the floor or hold each other close.

Quadrille Class (9:00 PM – 9:45 PM) – After time spent dancing together, it’s time to experience the magic of dancing with the entire room. The quadrille allows you to dance side by side with your partner while engaging with others, reinforcing the idea that love doesn’t exist in isolation—it thrives in community, shared joy, and laughter.

Final Social Dancing (9:45 PM – 10:00 PM) – The last few moments of the night are yours. Hold your partner close, spin together one last time, and take in the magic of the evening before stepping back into the world.

Mardi Gras Masquerade: The Grand Finale of Chicago Ball Season

Tuesday, February 17, 2026 | An Evening of Dance, Music & Celebration

The Mardi Gras Masquerade marks the grand finale of Chicago Ball Season, blending the rich traditions of Vienna, New Orleans, and Brazil for one spectacular night. Across the world, Mardi Gras is a time of revelry, music, and masked mystery, and in Vienna, it signals the final night of the winter ball season—a time to dance, celebrate, and bid farewell to the season in style.

And while hosting a ball on a Tuesday night may seem unconventional, Mardi Gras is no ordinary night. Over the years, we’ve found that many revel in the chance to break up their routine with an evening of elegance, indulgence, and pure joy. Step out of everyday life and into a world of rhythm, movement, and masked magic.

Choose Your Mardi Gras Experience:

This year, we’re offering three ways to celebrate, allowing you to tailor the night to your own rhythm:

Option 1: New Orleans Swing Class – $45 per person (15% off for members)

6:45 – 7:30 PM

Kick off the night with an electrifying swing dance lesson inspired by the streets of New Orleans. This high-energy style, known for its playful footwork and infectious rhythm, is deeply rooted in the jazz and blues culture of the Big Easy. Whether you’re new to swing or a seasoned dancer, this class will get you moving with the spirit of Mardi Gras.

Option 2: Brazilian Samba Class – $45 per person (15% off for members)

7:45 – 8:30 PM

Turn up the heat with a Brazilian Samba class—a dance that embodies joy, celebration, and the vibrant rhythms of Carnival. With its lively footwork, hip movements, and undeniable energy, Samba is a staple of Brazilian Mardi Gras celebrations, bringing people together in a swirl of movement and music.

Option 3: The Mardi Gras Ball Package – $80 per person (15% off for members)

Includes both dance classes, table seating, and Mardi Gras desserts.

For those who want to fully immerse themselves in the night, the Mardi Gras Ball Package offers the ultimate experience. Enjoy both dance classes, plus a reserved table seat to relax between dances, along with a selection of decadent Mardi Gras desserts.

Between and after classes, the dance floor will be open for social dancing, where you can practice your new moves, meet fellow dancers, and enjoy the festive energy of the final night of Chicago Ball Season.

A Night Steeped in Mardi Gras Tradition

Mardi Gras balls have long been a cornerstone of Carnival celebrations, dating back to medieval Europe before making their way to New Orleans and Brazil. These masked gatherings were once exclusive social events for high society, but over time, they evolved into celebrations of music, movement, and cultural fusion.

By combining New Orleans swing and Brazilian Samba, our Mardi Gras Masquerade pays homage to the global influences that have shaped this legendary night of revelry. Whether you’re swinging to the sounds of jazz or stepping into the pulse of Samba, you’re dancing in the spirit of Mardi Gras history.

Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball

Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball: The Grand Finale of Chicago Ball Season

Join us for an unforgettable evening at our Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball, the grand finale of Chicago Ball Season. Mardi Gras marks the last day of ball season in Vienna, and we’re bringing that tradition to Chicago with a celebration that’s as unique as our city.

While hosting a ball on a Tuesday might seem unconventional, there's something magical about indulging in an extraordinary event during the week. Over the years, we've discovered that many revel in the opportunity to break up the workweek with something truly special. This isn’t just any party—it’s a chance to immerse yourself in the elegance and excitement of a masquerade ball, even on a weekday.

Our Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball is designed to be a perfect blend of learning, dancing, and socializing, all within a relaxed, midweek atmosphere. We kick off the evening with a New Orleans Jitterbug class (think swing dance)—perfect for those who want to dive into the lively spirit of Mardi Gras. Later, we’ll shift gears with a waltz class, where you can experience the timeless grace of partner dancing.

Mardi Gras, with its rich history of masquerade balls and vibrant celebrations, has long been a symbol of revelry and the culmination of winter festivities. Originating from medieval Europe and carried to the New World by French settlers, Mardi Gras has evolved into a global phenomenon, celebrated with parades, music, and, of course, grand balls. Our masquerade ball pays homage to this centuries-old tradition, blending the lively spirit of New Orleans with the refined elegance of Vienna.

Event Details:

  • Date: Mardi Gras (Tuesday, March 4th)

  • Time: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM, Doors Open at 6:45 PM

  • Two dance classes: New Orleans Swing from 7 - 7:30 PM and Waltz from 8 - 8:30 PM.

  • Open dancing between and after dance classes.

  • Tickets: $50 per person in advance

  • Age Requirement: all participants must be 21 years old.

  • Attire: Creative cocktail, but since this is a masquerade ball, the only requirement is that you wear a mask (think decorative, not medical).

  • BYOB: Bring your favorite beverage to enjoy throughout the evening (beer and wine only, no liquor please).

Come and learn a little, dance a little, and make lasting memories. Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or a first-time attendee, this is the perfect way to close out Chicago Ball Season with flair. Don’t miss out on this extraordinary night of elegance, mystery, and celebration!

Viennese Ball

Join Us for a Viennese Ball at Ballroom Dance Chicago!

Join us on February 1st, from 8-11 PM, as we transform our space into a tribute to Vienna’s ball season.

Each year, our studio takes clients to Vienna for Ball Season, and this event serves as a dress rehearsal for that grand experience. Whether you're preparing for Vienna or simply eager to dance the Viennese waltz, this evening is for you.

Event Highlights:

  • Viennese Waltz Class: Start the evening with a class designed for all levels, ensuring everyone is ready to glide across the floor with grace. Whether you’re experienced or a novice, your participation adds to the spirit of the evening.

  • Quadrille Class: The Fledermaus Quadrille pulls you into its whirlwind of joy the moment the music begins. Surrounded by elegantly dressed dancers, you become part of the lively rhythm, spinning, weaving, and laughing as the spirited melody of Johann Strauss fills the room. The energy is contagious—gowns swirl, partners trade places, and the playful choreography blurs the line between graceful elegance and delightful chaos, making you feel alive in every step. Think of the quadrille as an elegant square dance.

  • An Invitation to Your Best Self - What to Wear:

This is a formal, white/black-tie optional event (or wear your best clothes), but it’s also an opportunity to step into a version of yourself you may not always show the world. Think of your attire as a costume—not just clothing, but a portal to your royal, Viennese persona. Imagine dressing as your most elegant, gracious, and vibrant self.

When selecting your attire, choose something that makes you feel regal and inspired—something that draws out confidence, kindness, and celebration. For some, this might mean an enchanting gown with a touch of whimsy or sophistication. For others, it could be a classic tuxedo or tails with a flourish of individuality.

But this isn’t just about the fabric you wear; it’s about the energy you bring. Your “costume” is also an attitude - a decision to bring merriment, to share joy, and to enrich the experience of everyone you meet. Let your presence inspire others to embrace their own best selves, creating an elevated experience where the whole room vibrates with intentionality and grace.

Dress not only for yourself but for the shared story we’ll create together. Bring your most radiant spirit, and let’s enjoy an evening that none of us will soon forget.

  • Open Social Dancing: Following the classes, the night will be alive with the rhythms of Viennese waltz, English waltz, foxtrot, quickstep, and swing. Every dance, every conversation, and every gesture contributes to the collective elegance of the evening.

  • Desserts and Coffee: Vienna is renowned for its desserts and coffee, so we’ll feature a beautiful collection of pastries and brews to keep you refreshed and ready to dance.

Tickets and Event Details:

  • Date: February 1st, 2024

  • Time: 8-11 PM, Doors Open at 7:30 PM.

  • Location: 4039B N Ravenswood Ave, Chicago, IL 60613

  • Attire: Step into your finest attire and embody your most vibrant, joyful self, as we come together to create a night of unforgettable moments. Formal, white/black tie optional.

  • Tickets:

    • In Advance: $50/person for classes and social

    • At the Door: $60/person

  • Age Requirement: All guests must be 21 or older

  • Capacity: Limited to 60 people—tickets sell out fast, so don’t delay!

  • BYOB: Feel free to bring your favorite wine or beer (no hard liquor, please)

This event isn’t just a gathering; it’s a collaborative experience where everyone plays a role in creating a magical night. Through our dancing, conversation, attire, and demeanor, we weave what becomes an unforgettable evening.

Secure your spot today and become a part of something truly special.

Bridgerton Ball

Join Us for a Bridgerton Ball at Ballroom Dance Chicago!

Join us for an evening of regency elegance at the Bridgerton Ball, where we’ll bring to life the charm and refinement of the Bridgerton era.

This event offers a unique combination of Waltz and quadrille instruction, and a taste of regency-era etiquette.

Event Highlights:

Waltz Choreography: Begin the night by learning a special waltz choreography, designed for dancers of all levels. We’ll work together to create a beautiful group routine, which we’ll record and share with you. This is a rare chance to perform a coordinated waltz as a group and capture the elegance on film.

Quadrille Instruction: Explore the quadrille, a lively and elegant group dance that was a centerpiece of 18th and 19th-century ballroom culture. Performed in sets of four couples, the quadrille is a dynamic sequence of intricate figures and patterns. Dancers weave through graceful formations, exchanging partners, curtsying, and bowing, all in perfect synchronization. It’s a bit like a formal, elegant precursor to square dancing, filled with energy, charm, and interaction. Our instructors will guide you through each movement, ensuring that everyone can enjoy this delightful and social dance.

Etiquette & Formal Manners: Throughout the evening, we’ll touch on essential regency-era etiquette, so you can move with grace and confidence, whether you’re dancing or mingling.

Debutante” Presentation: Enjoy a quasi-debutante presentation, where select dancers will showcase the refinement of this timeless tradition and other dances.

Event Details:

  • Capacity: Limited to 60 guests—tickets sell out fast, so don’t delay!

  • BYOB: Feel free to bring your favorite wine or beer (no hard liquor, please).

A Further Word On Attire:

Dress to impress in regency-inspired attire or formal wear. Think elegant, floor-length gowns, and tailored suits or tuxedos. For those who want to fully embrace the Bridgerton theme, regency dresses with empire waistlines, flowing fabrics, gloves, and delicate accessories will capture the look of the era. The charm of the period is also reflected with tailcoats, waistcoats, cravats, and polished shoes.

Formal attire is always a suitable option if regency isn’t your style. Traditional evening gowns or cocktail dresses work beautifully, or black tie or sharp suits. The goal is to create a night of timeless elegance, whether you’re dressed for a modern ballroom or a scene from Bridgerton.

For a deeper discussion about attire, read our blog about Regency and Formal attire.

Keep in mind that is more than just an evening of dancing—it’s a chance to be part of a collaborative, elegant experience. New Year’s Eve Ball

Ring in the New Year with Dance, Desserts, and Connection!

Tired of the usual New Year’s Eve plans? Looking for something truly special to share with your partner and create lasting memories? Join us for our New Year’s Eve Ball—a post-dinner event dedicated to dancing, connection, and an unforgettable atmosphere.

Our balls are more than just gatherings; they are transformative experiences where attendees can say, “I left everything out there in the ballroom.” These events build a lasting tradition of meaningful, connected, and culturally rich community gatherings. They give everyone a sense of purpose and belonging that lingers well beyond the final note, reminding us how powerful shared experiences can be in shaping our world.

This event is designed for couples seeking a meaningful way to welcome the New Year. Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or just starting out, this evening will bring you closer to your partner and the community of dancers who join us.

The night features a huge variety of our favorite music, blending swing, quickstep, foxtrot, waltz, and more. We’ll kick off with a group dance lesson—ideal for those new to the floor—and a simultaneous Lindy Hop masterclass with Matthew Sove for more experienced dancers.

As midnight approaches, the floor will open for dancing, where you can create your own magical moments as we ring in the New Year. We’ll toast to new beginnings with nonalcoholic sparkling wine, though you’re welcome to bring your own champagne for a personal touch.

As this is an after-dinner event, we’ll be offering a selection of desserts from Lutz Bakery along with a coffee bar. If you’d prefer wine or beer, feel free to bring your own beverages, as this event is BYOB!

This is more than just a party; it’s a night to reconnect and celebrate together.

Event Highlights

  • Live Dance Floor: Experience an open dance floor with a mix of swing, quickstep, foxtrot, waltz, and more. Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or a beginner, this night will inspire you to move.

  • Desserts Spread by Lutz Bakery: Enjoy sweets and treats inspired by ball season in Vienna. We’ll serve Sacher Torte, apple strudel, and much more!

  • BYOB: While non-alcoholic beverages will be provided, guests are welcome to bring their own wine or champagne to make the evening even more special.
